From time to time we all need a make over. Tired hair style, tired wardrobe, and tired home décor. We get out the magazines, hit the web in search of a new style to help us to fall in love with ourselves or our surroundings all over again. Well for many of us it is high time to make over our daily cuisine.
As a raw foodist who seeks to get at least 60-70% of my daily intake in the form of raw veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds and sprouts to bring myself into a state of balance, health, wellness and vitality, I am always looking to put a new spin on some of the old favorites.
Take pasta for example. Who doesn’t love pasta? In college, I think I lived on Ramen Noodles. Before becoming a raw foodist, Italian was one of my favorite types of food to eat. However most brands of pasta on the market contain gluten. This is bad news for the many of us who are aware of their sensitivity or allergy to gluten and the high numbers of people who are unaware. Gluten, which comes from the Latin word for “glue”, has been linked to digestive issue, weight problems, ADD and a host of other problems. So as you may imagine, I was so thrilled to find that I could make over my pasta and still enjoy the experience without the drawbacks.
My favorite raw pasta dish is made with squash, so I like to call it “squasta”. I take yellow squash or zucchini and pop it on the spiralizer and in moments I have enough “squashta” for two. I top it with olive oil and my rawBella Marinara and, Violá, raw spaghetti that is gluten free, full of the good fats, alkalizing, energizing and moreover deeeeelish!
With the spiralizer you can make “pasta” from carrots, jicama, or squash or anything else that will fit. Top with raw marinades, olive or sesame oil and flavored vinegars, pico de gallo, raw nut cheeses, you name it. To make the make over complete, be sure to give yourself the full Italian experience, and swirl it on the end of your fork and slurp it up into you mouth.
