The Solar Eclipse and Your Fur Babies

Damita MIller-Shanklin

We love our pets and they are our family members. As we think about our children and family members, we need to make sure we take care of our fur babies.

Here are some things I found we should remember:

  1. Keep Pets Indoors: For pets such as cats and dogs, it’s generally safest to keep them indoors during a solar eclipse. This helps prevent them from directly looking at the sun, which could potentially harm their eyes. Additionally, it reduces the risk of pets becoming disoriented or scared by the sudden darkness.
  2. Provide a Safe Environment: If your pets are outdoors during the eclipse, make sure they have access to a safe and sheltered environment. This could be a covered area or a shelter where they can seek refuge if they feel stressed or anxious.
  3. Monitor Behavior: Keep an eye on your pets’ behavior during the eclipse. While some animals may not be visibly affected, others may become anxious or restless. If you notice any signs of distress, such as pacing, hiding, or vocalizing, try to comfort them and provide reassurance.
  4. Limit Exposure to Noise: During the eclipse, there may be loud noises from people or fireworks as part of eclipse celebrations. If your pets are sensitive to loud sounds, consider keeping them in a quiet room indoors where they can feel safe and secure.
  5. Provide Distractions: Offering distractions such as toys, treats, or comforting items like blankets can help keep pets occupied and alleviate any anxiety they may experience during the eclipse.
  6. Ensure Identification: In case your pets become frightened and attempt to escape, make sure they are wearing collars with identification tags or are microchipped with up-to-date information. This can help facilitate their safe return if they wander off.
  7. Animal Behavior: Some animals exhibit unusual behaviors during a solar eclipse. Birds may roost, crickets may chirp, and nocturnal animals may become active, thinking night has fallen prematurely.

If you have specific concerns about your pets’ behavior or well-being during the event, consult with a veterinarian for personalized advice.
