Let’s Talk Books

Ujima Reading Lounge

Reading books have been a part of our lives for a long while. A special memory is reading books and learning about the world around us, relationships, love and friendships. Ujima has always been an advocate of reading, especially encouraging our young people to read and share books.

Our book recommendation is Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile. Some of you may be watching the series on the Oprah Winfrey OWN network. Ujima suggest you pick up the book as well.

For those of you not familiar with the story when Charley unexpectedly inherits eight hundred acres of sugarcane land, she and her eleven-year-old daughter say goodbye to smoggy Los Angeles and head to Louisiana. She soon learns, however, that cane farming is always going to be a white man’s business. As the sweltering summer unfolds, Charley struggles to balance the overwhelming challenges of a farm in decline with the demands of family and the startling desires of her own heart.
