Thoughts From Damita
September is always very exciting. I celebrate my birthday and we celebrate Ujima Magazine’s anniversary. This has also been a difficult year personally for me and my family. My mother passed away on April 5, 2025 and my life has changed. She played a big part in Ujima from the beginning. She was proud of the magazine and what I contributed to the black community.
As I continue telling stories and highlighting our “everyday heroes” my mother will be in my heart and mind. She was my hero and I know she is watching over me and Ujima.
We will continue celebrating our 17th anniversary all month. Please make sure you follow us on our social media platforms.
Everyday Heroes Spotlight

Seventeen years ago, Ujima was born out of a simple need to tell our community’s stories. From glossy pages to digital media, our journey has been one of resilience, growth, and love for the people that make a difference in the world and our communities.

What Ujima Is Enjoying!
We enjoyed our tea time at Austin English Tea Company. The tea was good along with the tasty sandwiches, scones and the sweet treats. The Fascinator hat was a good choice to elevate the experience but to be honest, I fought the request to wear one for two days. I finally gave in and said “okay, I will wear one.” It was out of my comfort zone, but it was worth it.
