Damita Miller-Shanklin, Editor-in-Chief

  1. Plan a Safe Route:
    • Before heading out, plan your trick-or-treating route. Stick to well-lit areas and well-known neighborhoods.
    • Inform someone you trust about your route and expected return time.
  2. Be Visible:
    • Wear bright or reflective costumes, or add reflective tape to your costume, to make yourself more visible to drivers.
    • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to illuminate your path.
  3. Stay in Groups:
    • Trick-or-treat in a group with friends or family. There’s safety in numbers.
    • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult.
  4. Check Treats:
    • When you get home, inspect your candy and treats. Discard anything that looks tampered with or is not in its original, sealed packaging.
    • Avoid homemade treats from strangers.
  5. Street Safety:
    • Always use crosswalks, sidewalks, and obey traffic rules when crossing streets.
    • Be cautious of drivers, and make eye contact before crossing in front of a car.

Remember Halloween is meant to be a fun and enjoyable, and taking these precautions can help ensure a safe and happy experience.
