The Jewel Institute: Building Confidence in Math: How Autumn Shead Is Helping Students Succeed

Damita Miller-Shanklin, Writer

When I was in school, math was always a challenge for me. From learning the abacus in elementary school to taking courses in college, it never quite clicked. Looking back, I realize one thing I didn’t take advantage of was tutoring—something that might have made a real difference.

That’s why I found the work of Autumn Shead so interesting. As the Founder and CEO of The Jewel Institute, she helps young students who struggle with math, driven by what she describes as a “deep-rooted passion for mentoring, teaching, and guiding students toward success.”

Ujima: Hi Jewel, Math has always been my worst subject in school.  I struggled and I still have to double check myself when dealing with numbers. What drew you to the area of mathematics?

Shead: I struggled with math during my eighth-grade Algebra I course until I had a teacher who took the time to break down every step in a way I could truly understand. That experience changed everything. Math shifted from being a source of frustration to something engaging and even enjoyable. That transformation directly shaped my passion for tutoring. From that moment on, numbers were no longer a chore—they were an opportunity. My goal is to ensure that other students experience the same confidence, clarity, and excitement for learning that my teacher gave me.

Ujima: What is the mission of the Jewel Institute of Education?

Shead: The mission of Jewel Institute is to make education an engaging and empowering experience, where students gain the knowledge and confidence to succeed—not only in math, but in life. We meet students where they are through personalized instruction delivered in a supportive group setting, allowing each learner to grow at their own pace while benefiting from collaboration and community. Founded with a passion for transforming education, Jewel Institute believes every student deserves accessible, high-quality learning experiences that unlock their full potential.

Ujima: Do you provide group services or just one on one? What is the service most parents/students request?

Shead: Jewel Institute primarily offers small-group math tutoring services designed to provide personalized support within a collaborative learning environment. One-on-one tutoring is available upon request, with pricing adjusted accordingly. We serve students of all ages, beginning in third grade and up, with a strong focus on supporting learners in Algebra and other foundational math courses to build understanding, confidence, and long-term academic success.

Ujima: When you meet a student where they are, what is your approach?

Shead: The first session begins with a few guided practice problems to assess the student’s current level of understanding of the concept. Drawing on my teaching background, I observe how students approach problems to identify strengths, gaps, and learning needs, allowing me to determine the most effective starting point. My instruction is intentionally structured and incorporates educational games to make learning engaging and accessible. I teach students how to take clear, effective notes and how to use them as a tool to build confidence and independence. Emphasis is placed on mastery, ensuring students fully understand each section of a concept before progressing to the next.

Ujima: Is there something that is important that you would like the community to know that I did not ask?

Shead: I believe that all students can learn and succeed, regardless of where they begin their academic journey. I provide tutoring services to students of all backgrounds and with diverse learning needs, and I am committed to creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment where every learner feels valued and capable of growth.

Ujima: How can parents reach you and how can our readers follow you?
