The decision by the Supreme Court to discontinue the need for Affirmative Action will once again change how black people move ahead. This scares me because it is a way to act on racism without justice. Have you thought about this? This is especially important for our generations of tomorrow. But today’s impact will also be significant.
What is Affirmative Action?
Affirmative action in the United States is the active effort to improve employment, educational, and other opportunities for members of groups that have been subjected to discrimination. Criteria for affirmative action include race, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, and age. (Encyclopedia Britannica).
Just by the definition, you can clearly see how the impact this change will have on our black community. All of these areas are a platform where black citizens work hard to fit into without being discriminated against. Affirmative Action in my view kept the door open for us to succeed and get a chance to go to college, apply for higher level jobs, housing and other opportunities that are open to other people. We are no longer protected.
The fear is that our children who are smart and meet all the qualifications to enter a good college or university will be denied access because of the color of their skin. They should not have to write an essay to “beg” a college or university institution to take them as a studen based on their background versus their academic achievements. It is totally ridiculous and degrading. I think about older adults who still need to work and they apply for a job because they are black and over 50 they will not be employed. The probability of discrimination goes on and on.
What Are Some of The Implications for Our Black Community?
Reduction in opportunities
The black community has faced systemic barriers and discrimination, which affirmative action seeks to address. Changes to these policies might make it harder for black individuals to overcome existing disparities and achieve equal representation.
Increased competition
Access to limited opportunities may become more competitive, potentially affecting black individuals who may already face socioeconomic challenges.
Enhanced focus on merit
Policy can promote a more merit-based system, where qualifications and abilities are the primary factors considered for educational or employment opportunities.
Socioeconomic implications
These policies could disproportionately impact low-income black individuals who already face significant barriers due to economic disadvantages.
Diverse perspectives
Policies may limit this diversity, potentially diminishing the richness of perspectives within these spaces.
The consequences of policy changes depend on various factors and can differ across different communities and individuals within the black community. What are your thoughts?
