The holiday season can be a stressful time. Over the years I have learned how to manage my stress and ensure my mental health and capacity stays in a “jolly” mood. When I feel overwhelmed, I find that I shut down and want to be alone. But that is not a good way to enjoy the holiday season.
I wanted to share the four things I do when I feel stressed and overwhelmed.
1). I make sure I look at what is realistic for me. I make sure I only take on what I know I can do without feeling overwhelmed. I stay away from beating myself up for saying no. When I make a decision, I stick with it and let it go.
2). I plan my to-do list and follow it. This is my favorite thing to do. I don’t like going to the mall to shop, so I do my shopping online. I make my list and complete my orders. I try to order at one time. I also make a list for any task I may have to do prior to the day of celebration.
3). I take plenty of breaks. Probably too many :). But when I need to get away from planning and ordering, I do my art. Just having a place to escape and let my mind and creativity go feels good to me. You should have a place or an activity that will help you feel calm and you can get your energy back. It’s very important to not get overwhelmed and find your calm.
4). Lastly, I like to connect with my friends and family. I schedule to meet a friend for brunch, coffee or just talk virtually. It is time to catch up and check in with a friend or a family member.
I hope these suggestions can help you stay focused, less stressed and less overwhelmed. I hope you can manage your stress better and have a happy holiday season.
How do you handle your stress during the holidays? I would love to know.
