In Ayurveda, having good digestion is one of the most important aspects of well-being. Digestion of food and digestion of life experiences are paramount to feeling well. Ayurveda says that we all have a digestive fire that burns and metabolizes the food we eat and turns it into nutrients that power our cells. This digestive fire also processes emotions we experience. Have you heard of the concept of eating your largest meal between the hours of 12 and 2? Well that is an ancient Ayurvedic concept that follows the Laws of Nature, that says we should sync our lives with the circadian rhythms of nature.
If we look to the sun-one of the most powerful forces in the universe, we can innately understand many of these natural laws. The sun is shining its brightest between the hours of 12 and 2. Since we also have fire energy in our digestive system that transforms food, we should be consuming the bulk of our nutrients during this time. When we eat large meals outside these hours, our digestive system becomes taxed as it does not have as much transformation power available.
When our digestive fire is weak or irregular, we may have difficulty digesting our food, emotions and life experiences. What results is a buildup of toxic residue. This toxic residue blocks the free flow of information and energy in the body and even leads to a weakened immune system, tiredness and difficulty following through with things.
Ways we can support our digestion:
- Eat largest meal between 12-2 and last meal at least 1 hour before the sun sets
- Fill two parts of the stomach with solid food, one part liquids and one part for air
- Use ginger in meals and as a tea to improve digestion
- Include plenty of alkaline fruits and vegetables as part of your staple diet
- Limit between-meal snacking and instead focus on nourishing meals
- Eat without any distractions (phone, talking, reading) and while sitting down
- Practice gratitude for your food before and while eating
If you are experiencing difficulty digesting food or life, consider an Ayurvedic/Alkaline Consult to help you get back into alignment.
